Post Hurricane Sandy Urban Environments
Strategic Planning for Resiliency
Brooklyn & Queens, NY
RRA was commissioned by NYC Housing Authority to develop accelerated assessments, strategic plans and concept designs for future flood mitigation and disaster recovery for both the short and long term. Our work encompassed 5 housing developments, 56 buildings, 3,550 apartment units, 10 daycare centers, senior and community centers in Brooklyn and Queens affected by Hurricane Sandy in FEMA’s Flood Zone A. Working with our MEP and civil engineers, our design solutions and documents included relocation of existing boiler and electrical switchgear infrastructure, renovation of all grade and basement public areas, redesign of site landscaping and self-contained community relief shelters with material resiliency and sustainability as principal goals in our recommendations. Our design efforts were recognized with a SARA Silver Award.
