Accessible Justice
ADA Compliance Strategy
For DCAS Courthouses throughout NYC
5 Boroughs, New York City
In 2016, RRA was engaged by the Department of Citywide Administration Services to survey and plan renovations for all 26 courthouses in New York City to guarantee compliance with the most recent Americans With Disabilities (ADA) guidelines. The first phase of the work included a detailed analysis of each courthouse to understand the limitations of accessibility for public, court staff and detained persons. The existing conditions of the courthouses added another layer of complexity, requiring repair recommendations specific to each building - from historically preserved buildings to multi-floor high-rises and numerous pre-war structures containing many layers of previous renovations. RRA developed a detailed scope of work for DCAS and is currently developing design documents to implement our recommendations.
