City College NY Accessibility, Gothic Quad
Accessibility in a historic exterior context.
ADA Accessibility Ramps and Walkways at CCNY’s Historic Gothic Quad
RRA designed and implemented an ADA-compliant accessible ramp connecting Convent Avenue to the center of the historic Gothic Quad at the City College of New York (CCNY). The Quad, surrounded by landmarked historical buildings, required a sensitive design approach that balanced accessibility needs with the preservation of its historic character. This project was completed through close coordination with various stakeholders, including DASNY, Landmarks and the College, ensuring compliance with regulations and the highest design standards.
Approach
The primary goal was to provide seamless and permanent ADA access to the Quad, which sits 5 to 6 inches above Convent Avenue. The ramps and walkways also had to maintain the integrity of the historic setting. The ramp’s design harmonizes with the architectural language of the site, incorporating materials and details that blend with the Gothic Revival surroundings. Additionally, the ramps and walkways facilitate access to the western portion of the Quad, where temporary walkways had previously provided limited accessibility. By prioritizing inclusivity, the project not only improves mobility for individuals with disabilities but also enhances the overall usability of the space for all visitors.
The project was delivered under budget, saving $80,000, while exceeding expectations for accessibility, aesthetics, and integration with the historic environment.
